A Victorian woman must know much about flowers. For example, she needed to be able to identify the forms and colors of flowers when choosing her brocade dresses, her fine wallpaper, or the details of the parlor furniture. The lady was aware of which flowers could produce pleasant fragrances and be used in bouquets. She also knew what herbs were good for freshening a space and how to make a boutonniere for her jacket. This was in an age when full immersion bathing was only for therapeutic purposes and indoor plumbing was the norm. Roses, jasmine and lilac would add freshness to one's home as well.
