SUMMARY   Services Excellence Summary

San Jose Bike Clinic, a bicycle repair shop in San Jose is dedicated to building community through education and bike repairs. A group of 25 San Jose-area bicycling advocates and enthusiasts met in November 2011 to discuss the possibility of building something that could serve the biking community like bike shops, transport advocacy groups, nonprofits, and individual individuals. This idea is based on many other programs such as bike co-ops and bike kitchens that are available across the nation. This idea was deemed worthy of further exploration by the group. Although not all those who attended the initial exploratory meeting continued to participate, new volunteers organized the project after hearing about it. In November and December 2011, the organizers met with four leaders from local non-profits, Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition and Silicon Valley Bike Exchange. These meetings revealed that San Jose had an unmet demand and supported the Bike Clinic idea. Two meetings were held in January 2012 to reach a consensus on a set of goals and statements. The group then created a mission statement and voted for our names. San Jose Bike Clinic was thus born. The Coming Out Demo was our first event. It took place on March 3rd 2012 at Diridon Transit Centre in downtown San Jose. We had about 70 participants. 41 of these people received services, which included bike repair instruction and access to stands and tools. We also provided safety rides that taught them how to ride safely on the streets. On April 29, 2012, we hosted the Bike to Work Gear Up at San Pedro Square Market in downtown San Jose. It drew around 60 people during the entire day. More than 40 people were served that day. We hoped to prepare them for Bike To Work Day two weeks later. Bike repair education was provided, as well as personalized route planning and tools. We also offered safety rides, games, and bike repairs. Bike Clinic organizers continue to meet two times per month for planning. They also hold monthly Skill Sharing sessions at San Pedro Square Market. On a regular basis, we also attend the San Jose Downtown Farmers Market, where we lead rides and may pursue temporary public service opportunities in downtown San Jose.
