SUMMARY   Services Excellence Summary

Mexican Heritage Plaza, also known as La Plaza or MHP (or La Plaza), is an innovative cultural center that's located in east San Jose's Mayfair neighborhood. This area has been home to a large number of Mexican Americans since the middle of the 20th century. In 1999, the City of San Jose built the MHP on the spot of Cesar Chavez's first boycott of grocery stores in support of farm worker rights. The City of San Jose started looking for new uses of La Plaza in 2007. After a community assessment, La Plaza was designated as a school for arts and culture. In 2009, a Steering Committee developed a plan of action to accomplish that goal. The recommendation of the Committee to establish the School of Arts and Culture (SOAC) was unanimously accepted by the City in 2010. SOAC was established as a non profit on July 11, 2011 and became the operator for the MHP in Sept 2013.
