SUMMARY   Services Excellence Summary

The intersectional feminist approach to visual arts theory, education, and criticism is presented in Mentoring Artists for Women's Art. In 1984, the artist-run center was established to provide a forum for critical discourse and education in order to support and encourage the creative and intellectual development of women working in visual arts. MAWA is now addressing the full spectrum of discrimination against women, including non-binary and transgender people, as well as Two-Spirit individuals, in all its programs. MAWA's core activity is mentoring, which informs every aspect of its work. MAWA Mentorships can last from 2-12 months, are sometimes centered around a particular media or topic, and culminate with an exhibition. They provide a transformative learning experience. Mentorship is a way to share knowledge, experiences, networks, and support. It can help advance careers, and build a vibrant, multigenerational community of artists. MAWA residency programs offer women artists and non-binary individuals of any career level the chance to create and research in MAWA’s work/live apartment. Winnipeg's artists can experience international artistic opportunities and communities through exchanges with three residency programs. MAWA also offers a variety of visual arts programming that is accessible to people of any gender, including talks and workshops by artists from around the world, workshops on traditional Indigenous and global artistic practices, workshops for professional practice, theoretical lectures, opportunities for critical writing, studio visits, critiques, and film screenings. The identity-based groups offer networking opportunities, peer support, feedback on artistic work, and professional opportunities.
