The academic Method starts with drawing exercises that develop observational skills needed for realistic rendering. The measurements used are both sight-size and memory-based comparisons. The students explore Old Master techniques to produce solid forms, realistic flesh shades, atmospheric distances, convincing surface textures, and realistic surface textures. It is an entire system for painting. This system is designed to help students develop their skills through training and practice using traditional methods. It is an old-fashioned method that has been used for centuries and no longer is taught in Universities or Colleges. Many of the "Modern", or modern, painters, such as Picasso, Van Gogh, and Degas were taught this method. They were then able to apply it to their own styles.
