The Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA) is one of Canada's oldest continually-operating artist-run organizations. John Campbell, the 9th Duke of Argyll, Canada's governor general, founded the RCA in 1880 in conjunction with the National Gallery of Canada. The first members of the RCA were painter Lucius R. O'Brien and architect/painter Napoleon Bourassa. Since then, prestigious Academicians include painters Marcel Barbeau and Ghitta Ciserman-Roth; illustrators Lynne Cohen and Samuel Tata; ceramicist Erica Deichman Gregg and silversmith Lois Etherington Betteridge. The RCA today is dedicated to ensuring a diverse membership and artistic disciplines. Over 650 professionals in the visual arts, design, and fine crafts fields are represented by RCA. These include architects, landscape designers, painters and printmakers, photographers, designers of books, textiles and fashion, designers, and interior designers.
