OCAD University was established by the Ontario Society of Artists in Toronto, Ontario in 1876. It was originally called the Ontario School of Art. It was established in 1912 as the Ontario College of Art. This school became the first in Canada to focus exclusively on the training of professionals in commercial and fine art. The name was changed to Ontario College of Art and Design in 1996 due to increased demand for design programs. The school was officially renamed OCAD University in 2010 to better reflect its status as an OCAD University. OCAD University recognizes the traditional and ancestral territories of the Mississaugas, the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabe, as well as the Huron-Wendat who were the original owners and custodians. OCAD University recognizes the traditional and ancestral territories of the Mississaugas of the Credit and the Haudenosaunee. They are the original owners of the land and the custodians.
