The Archbishop of Regina Monsignor Olivier Elzear Mathieu dreamed at the start of the century of a Catholic educational institution to serve his faithful Catholics of French-Canadian heritage. His dream was realized when, on the 14th of December 1918, the Catholic College of Gravelbourg (nicknamed "College Mathieu") opened its doors to all French-speaking men of any age. The first college building was completely inadequate in its first year. A second building, built on foundations originally intended for the parish church in 1919, is constructed. The success of the first year exceeded all expectations. There was also a need for additional teachers. In August 1920, Bishop Mathieu gave the College to the Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate. They took over control of it and began the construction. The College's capacity will be doubled by the construction of this second structure.
