SUMMARY   Services Excellence Summary

After a team of Pasadena Target Archers members attended an event in Redlands, where field archery was introduced to the public, the Pasadena Roving Archers were established. Field archery is similar to golf in that archers travel from one target towards another on a course with 28 targets. Although it shares the same area, the original layout was quite different. There were many difficult shots, including one where archers had to climb up a tree while shooting from a branch. Although the course went through several revisions, it was still in its original form by 1940. The footings from the original PRA clubhouse can be seen between the targets 16-17. A larger clubhouse north of target 1 was built in 1945. The PRA continued to operate from that location until its destruction by arson in 2002. PRA had become a premier field range in the country by 1950. It was the home of several international and national champions. In 1949, PRA hosted a national tournament that attracted more than 1500 spectators. In 1950 Sylmar's Sagittarius Broadhead Range lost its property. It moved to the lower end of Lower Arroyo’s archery range, and remained there until the 1970s. The proliferation of archery clubs in southern California, including three located in the Lower Arroyo, had made it difficult to maintain a steady membership. PRA saw its membership drop to 16 by the middle 1960s. To increase membership, they began to offer lessons for free to anyone who was interested. PRA membership exploded after Pasadena locked down its target range in 1975. The Pasadena Target Archers were also shut down. All existing PTA memberships were then transferred to PRA when PTA collapsed. In 1972, the Roving Archers entered into an agreement with Pasadena to make their first archery lesson an official part the city's recreation program. These classes are used by over 10,000 students each year.
