This means they create model portfolios to meet the different needs of their investors. Conservative investors will be placed in the conservative portfolio while aggressive investors will go to the aggressive model. Moderate investors will be placed in a mix of both. Once you have determined your tolerance for risk, portfolios will be rebalanced on a quarterly basis to the initial asset allocations. One conservative portfolio might have 10% cash and 40% government bonds. The remaining 50% would be equities from the consumer staples and utilities sectors. After a quarter, 50% of the portfolio value may have been reached by equities. To realign the asset allocation to the original model, equity will be sold to make way for government bonds. This allows the remaining cash, bonds, and equities to remain the same as when the model was created. Rebalancing simply involves adjusting overweighted or underweight holdings to match the portfolio's allocations. This rebalancing is passive and reactive. It does not involve proactive or preemptive money management. If the institution creating the portfolio modifies the asset allocations of the model, then rebalancing will be a mere math exercise without any management.
