The Magraths continue to provide services for their neighbors in a world where more funeral homes have been taken over by large, distant corporations. Magrath Funeral home has been a family-owned and controlled business since 1910 when Frederick A. Magrath founded it. It continues to serve the community with respect and dignity. Frederick A. Magrath started his business in Maverick Square, 64 Meridian Street. This was back when most wakes were held at private residences. The Magrath family opened East Boston's first truly funeral home in 1947. It was located on the former Bethel Church site. This facility was the first to allow a funeral outside the family home, easing much of the burden on families in times of need. The building was demolished to make room for the Callahan Tunnel in 1959. It became home to the Magrath Funeral Home at 325 Chelsea Street, where it has remained almost sixty years later.
