Memphis Metro Alarm Ordinance/Office has a fundamental goal to reduce false alarm calls that local law enforcement agencies receive every day, night. It also aims to improve response efficiency and effectiveness through alarm permit registration. Over the years, false alarms have been a major problem in large cities such as Memphis. Metro Alarm Office works with residents to help them use alarm systems more responsibly and alarm companies, to better service the systems that they sell. It is hoped that this will result in a reduction of false alarms and a rise in legitimate calls. This revised ordinance is in effect as of 1 January 2020.
