The University of Tennessee opened its first Memphis campus in 1911. It was dedicated to only health science research and education. In a matter of years, seed programs in pharmacy, medicine and dentistry flourished. Within a short time, new programs in nursing, health science, and graduate studies were established. Each one of these programs became a college. The UT Graduate School of Medicine, Knoxville was established in 1963 and became part of UT Health Science Center. The UTHSC was formed in 1974 when the Chattanooga UT College of Medicine, which is located at Erlanger Health System joined the system. Six colleges make up the University of Tennessee Health Science Center's Memphis campus. They are Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences and Health Professions. Nursing, Pharmacy, Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Memphis Core Teaching Hospitals: Six colleges, four campuses and the Health Science Center pursue basic science and translational research. Private and government funding are available to UTHSC researchers.
