His journey to orthodontics began at New York University where he graduated in the top of the class and was inducted into the honors society Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU). His greatest academic honor was to give the valedictorian speech at graduation in the famed David Geffen Hall at New York’s Lincoln Center. After dental school, he completed his three-year orthodontic speciality training at the oldest orthodontic program in the country, Columbia University. In residency he was awared both prestigious scholarships in clinical and academic excellence and was selected by the faculty to serve as Chief Resident. Upon successful completion of his residency, Dr. Matthew applied and passed his final examinations with the American Board of Orthodontists to be come board-certified. This is the highest qualification an orthodontist can receive. However, even after certification, Dr. Matthew continued his education with a fellowship in hidden or lingual braces at UTHSCSA and became the first orthodontist to receive this training. Life experiences like humanitarian service trips to Grenada and living in the Dominican Republic have provided Dr. Matthew with rich cultural perspectives that help him relate well to a wide diversity of patients.
