Lawrence Markey's gallery was opened in April 1990 by Fred Sandback. The exhibition Seven Part Vertical Construction was shown. Lower Manhattan's 55 Vandam Street was the location of this sunlit gallery that offered views over the Hudson River. Following the first exhibition, there were many more by artists such as Ernst Caramelle and Paul Feeley. The gallery has always had a strong history of historical exhibitions. They featured artists Mel Bochner (James Bishop), Mel Bochner, Stephen Kaltenbach and Sol LeWitt. John McLaughlin, Richard Tuttle and John McLaughlin were just a few. The gallery relocated uptown in May 2000 from Soho, to 42 East 76th Street. Al Taylor, Richard Nonas and Max Neuhaus, as well as exhibitions by the gallery's more tenured artists, followed. The gallery moved from New York's Upper East Side in September 2005 to San Antonio, Texas. Our program is committed to artists we have worked with in New York for 25 years. This includes artists who were shown after our move to Texas, such as Rudlf de Crignis and Rudlf de Crignis. We publish writings from Alan Gurganus, Bob Nickas, Bill Berkson, Wayne Thiebaud and Lane Relyea, Barry Schwabsky, Mel Bochner and Richard Shiff, Donato Loia, on Glenn Heim.
