After being asked to leave their 901 Main Street studios by the local developer, 23 Vancouver artists decided in 2006 to attempt to save them. The site had been slated to be redeveloped. The 901 Main building had served as a Vancouver cultural landmark and studio for more than 20 years. Artists and Vancouver's arts community were fighting to save their studio space. They took the fight all the way up to City Hall. Save 901 Main campaign raised awareness of the artist's plight and Vancouver's lack of affordable, dedicated artist space. Portside Studios are the home to 901 Artists, an artist cooperative with the goal of providing affordable studio space in Vancouver. Portside Studios, a vibrant community of artists located in an elegant and light-filled waterfront space, is home to a large number of talented individuals. The Eastside Culture Crawl brings in thousands of people and it is an important hub for the Vancouver cultural scene.
