Girls Action was started in 1995 as an initiative by three women who were fresh out school and had an entrepreneurial spirit. There was no financial support and there were no restrictions. POWER Camp, as it was then called, is accessible to girls who are not in the best of circumstances. It encourages girls to find their power and make positive changes in their communities and lives. Our success was built on listening to the girls. Trust was built between girls and young women facilitators. The girls came out from their shells to learn about media, body image, gender discrimination and violence prevention. We were soon contacted by communities all across Canada, keen to share our knowledge. With so many individuals wanting to help girls, we realized that a national organization could have a positive ripple effect and benefit even more. Girls Action was founded to create a network of girl's initiatives in the nation. Our goal is to support young girls and women in leadership development by providing mentorship, resources, and new skills.
